Before your Trip

One of the best snorkeling spots on the Big Island is Kealakekua Bay at Captain Cook Monument. The bay is a protected marine sanctuary with calm, clear water, healthy coral reefs, tropical fish, Hawaiian sea turtles, and occasional spinner dolphins. It is also one of Kona’s most iconic ocean destinations because it combines world-class snorkeling with Hawaiian history.
For daytime snorkeling in Kona, morning is usually the best time because ocean conditions are often calmer and visibility is better. Dolphin Discoveries’ early morning Kona snorkel tour is designed around those calmer conditions and clearer water. For manta ray snorkeling, the best time is after sunset, when lights attract plankton and manta rays come in to feed. Kona’s coast has favorable seas year-round, and manta rays are seen on most nights.
Yes, but it is best for beginner-level swimmers who already have some snorkeling experience. You do not need to be an expert, but you should be comfortable floating face-down in the water, breathing through a snorkel, swimming a short distance to the light board, and climbing back onto the boat ladder. If someone has never snorkeled before or is not comfortable in the ocean, a daytime Captain Cook snorkel is usually a better first step.
While snorkeling along the Kona Coast, you may see colorful reef fish like yellow tang, parrotfish, Moorish idols, raccoon butterflyfish, and Hawaii’s state fish, the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa. You may also spot moray eels, octopus, sea urchins, coral gardens, Hawaiian green sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and manta rays. During winter, humpback whales may also be seen from the boat.
Yes. Captain Cook snorkeling is absolutely worth it, especially if you want one of the clearest, most scenic, and most wildlife-rich snorkeling experiences on the Big Island. Kealakekua Bay is a protected marine area with calm water, excellent visibility, colorful reefs, tropical fish, sea turtles, and occasional dolphins. The Captain Cook Monument also adds a meaningful historical backdrop, making the tour more than just a swim.
